Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

mL2639_1024x1024My first run as an online film critic began with a Spider-Man review, so it’s only natural for me to try and start a new one in the same way.

THE STORY: Spider-Man fails to stop a particle accelerator experiment that puts him out of commission, but brings five other Spider-heroes from parallel dimensions to Brooklyn. It’s up to Miles Morales, bitten by a radioactive spider two days earlier, to learn the ropes from these displaced heroes and stop the accelerator before it tears the universe apart.

THE SCORE: “Amazing” and “Spectacular” are words that come to mind. 4.5/5

The Fate of the Furious

furiousposter_0

I’m a big Fast & Furious fan, but I haven’t written about any of those movies here. Let’s change that.

What’s It About? When street-racing mercenary Dominic Toretto abandons his family to join a high-tech crime syndicate, it’s up to his old crew to track him down and find out why.

STRAIGHT UP: Fun, but far from the franchise’s best. 3/5

Your Name (Kimi no Na wa)

xq1Ugd62d23K2knRUx6xxuALTZB

The highest-grossing anime film of all time has finally come to my city!

What’s It About? An unusual bond forms between Taki and Mitsuha, two Japanese high school students, when they begin waking up in each other’s bodies – but this seemingly random phenomenon may actually have a greater purpose.

STRAIGHT UP: Colorful, inventive, and full of warmth. A true delight. 4.5/5

One Year Awards 2016

oyw16Ladies and gentlemen,

Once again, it is my sacred duty to hand out end-of-year honors to the most and least deserving movies and performers among us. I’ve changed the name of these awards to go along with all the rebranding I did at the beginning of the year – from now on, these are the One Year Awards!

The criteria for selection were as follows:

1. The film premiered in 2016.
2. I watched the film in full at some point, even if I didn’t review it.

Compared to last year, I’ve reduced the number of Worsts by one. I should also note that a number of deserving films from the last quarter of the year won’t appear here, as personal issues kept me away from the theater for a while. I apologize for any disappointment that might cause.

Enough talk, though. Let’s get on to the winners!

Voltron: Legendary Defender (Season 1)

Voltron_poster_finaljpeg

Red Comet Reviews features a TV series for the first time!

Voltron (1984) was a great show that aged like a bottle of fine milk. Can this new one inherit my hopes and dreams?

What’s It About? Five travelers from Earth are chosen to become the paladins of an alien princess, and must use the power of Voltron – five lion-shaped machines that can combine to form a mighty robot – to defend the universe from a vicious conqueror.

STRAIGHT UP: Has all the tools to surpass the original. 4.5/5
